How to Use and Fix a Pin Holder
Time: 3 minutes and 55 seconds
Whether you are an experienced designers, florist or hobbyist, a flower frog (also known as Kenyan, pin frogs or holder) are a floral arrangers best friend. They have many advantages including durable, eco-friendly, reusable and create beautiful, minimalist designs!
What is it?
It is a type of floral mechanic or technique used to construct flower arrangements and keep your stems in place in a container. They sit inside a container in the water and are traditionally known for their use in ikebana, the Japanese art of floral design. However, floral frogs have been adopted by flower lovers all over the world and are now used in a variety of styles.
What are they used for?
They keep the stems of flowers secure in the container. It acts as an anchor allowing you to establish a foundation for you design and build upon the shape. It has a recognisable shape, a metal heavy base with upright metal pins that stick straight up from the base. Stems are held on or between the pins.
Pin holders are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes and should chosen to suit the thickness of the stems being used.
Holders should be anchored to the bottom of the container with tack tape or modelling clay. You can use additional chicken wire over the holder to tie additional support to long stems or branches which cannot rest against the sides of the container.
Very interesting thanks Debbie
I have found it very hard to track down a pin holder. I’m looking for 2.5″/.
I have no idea what this “tack tape” is. Google and ebay are coming up with masking tape for painting and decorating. This looks much more like blue tack. Where how can I source them?
Thank you Mark for your comment. The tack tape that the tutor is using is A-Tac. It is green waterproof putty typically used to secure floral foam into plastic containers. Depending on where you are from, you can find it on Triangle Nursery webshop here Tack Tape. Hope this helps
