There is nothing shy about Hydrangea. They have enormous mass flower heads with beautiful star shaped flower petals that create coloration and textural interest in large arrangements.
One of the most popular blooms for wedding and events, for large floral displays and gift bouquet work.
Types of Hydrangea
There are different types of Hydrangea available on the flower markets. Varieties can vary in shape, colour, type and head size. Here are three types that are commonly used in floristry & flower arranging.
Caring for Hydrangea
The name 'Hydrangea' is derived from Greek and means 'water vessel' (Hydor). This name was given to the plant as they are incredibly thirsty flowers.
For purchasing, it is advised to source brightly coloured, full flower heads with well hydrated leaves. For conditioning, remove all foliage below the waterline, cut with a sharp knife or scissors and hydrate with flower food for a couple of hours or overnight before storage or usage.
Caring for Hydrangea is different to most flower varieties and they can be tricky as they are very wilt sensitive. Refer to the video on tips to help you revive Hydrangea should this occur.
Seasonal Availability
Most European Hydrangea are only available seasonally, whereas Colombian Hydrangea are available year round. The European are larger in size with more colour choices.
