Flower Guide for Gerbera

Gerbera are a staple in a florist workshop. They are a flowering perennial plant related to the sunflower and attracts birds, bees and butterflies. Gerberas are actually a type of Daisy (Asteraceae), and are one of the most popular flowers to buy due to their bright color and longevity.

A wonderful and colorful flower to design with, Gerbera can be a focal point or add mass to a floral design. They are phototropic and flower heads may turn to face a strong light.

Botanical Facts: Gerbera was named after Traug Gerber, (1700s) a German naturalist.

Description: Daisy-shaped flowers 10 to 12cm in diameter (large) and 7 to 9cm (small), on long, hollow, leafless stems 12 to 18 inches long. Single, double and multi-petaled varieties are available.

Types of Gerbera

This affordable, daisy like flowers are commonly used in flower arranging and floristry designs.

Colours: White, Pink, Yellow, Orange, Red, Purple, Salmon, Cerise, Bi-coloured. Dark or light centres.

Caring for Gerbera

In general, cut stems under water with a sharp knife or scissors. Condition in luke warm water with flower food for a couple of hours or overnight before storage or usage.

Gerberas should be suspended by their heads during the hydration process. This will result in straight stems, and eliminate the need for wiring. Gerberas are sensitive to fluoride. Fluoridated water can cause petal tip burn. If flowers are properly conditioned, bent necks should not occur. Refer to the video on how to condition the Gerbera.
